Ringing Church Bells

St. Barbara/Sophia Church

In the 1600s, there were as many as seven churches in Warka!

The St. Barbara one was located on the right bank of the Pilica River. Supposedly, it had been built by the Dominican Order, whose monks would often work in the fields encompassing the river. Having a church nearby enabled them to pray without having to embark on a long journey to the monastery church.

A legend has it, the church was engulfed by the Pilica River, and a lake sprang to life in the place where the ever so practical church had stood. To this day, sounds resembling bells ringing can be heard at night, coming from the lake, as if in a subtle call to prayer.
