Fr. Edward Wojda

Fr. Edward Wojda

Perennial head of St. Nicholas parish in Warka. Born on February 28, 1911 in Watraszew near Warka. He was ordained priest in a Warsaw cathedral on June 14, 1936. As a young vicar, he worked in parishes in Latowicz, Okuniew, Rembertów, and later in Warsaw.

He took part in the Warsaw Uprising. After the War, he played a role in the reconstruction of destroyed churches, including St. Nicholas Church.

After Warka parish priest Józef Szeronos passed away in 1958, Fr. Wojda took over the community and continued to lead it until 1989. His expertise and sacrifices did not go unnoticed. He devoted much attention to the youth, building a catechism house, introducing a special mass for the young with the participation of a youth band. He truly took care of his parishioners. In addition, he made the parish land available for the construction of a water treatment plant as well as a residential area.

In 1973, he became Dean of the Warka Decanate and Honorary Chaplain to His Holiness. Six years later, he was named Honorary Canon of the Primate Chapter in Łowicz. He helped shape numerous young priests. He stayed in Warka after he retired, and later moved to Otwock, where he lived in the local retired clergy residence.

He died on May 15, 2001. Several dozen priests flocked to mourn his passing during a funeral ceremony in the church of Our Lady of the Scapular, by Bishop Marian Duś, with the participation of innumerable nuns, dear family members, and devoted crowds of parishioners. He was buried in the old cemetery in Warka.
