Stanisław Marciniak

Born on September 19, 1911 in Warka. He attended public elementary school in Warka and a high school in Warsaw specializing in mathematics and nature studies. In the late 1930s, Stanisław Marciniak started studying physics at Warsaw University, but did not graduate due to the outbreak of WWII. During the German occupation, Marciniak lived in Warka. He was a member of the Home Army and engaged in underground education as early as September 1940. He taught high school subjects to 90 students.

After the town was freed, he gathered his students and created the local-government-run Co-Educational High School (Koedukacyjne Gimnazjum Samorządowe), which was reorganized in 1949. He presided over the school until 1951. Through his contacts in Warsaw, he was able to attract outstanding teachers, who made it possible for Warka youth to achieve a high school education and go to colleges and universities.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, he worked for the Institute of Experimental Physics at Warsaw University (Instytut Fizyki Doświadczalnej Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego) and earned his Masters Degree in Science in 1949. He continued his career at the Experimental Physics Department of the Medical University of Warsaw (Zakład Fizyki Doświadczalnej Akademii Medycznej w Warszawie), where he taught biophysics, medical statistics, and physics for 30 years. During that time, he received his Ph.D. and postdoctoral degree.

Dr. Marciniak also worked at the Central Institute for Labor Protection (Centralny Instytut Ochrony Pracy), Institute for Glass and Ceramics Industries (Instytut Przemysłu Szkła i Ceramiki) as well as the Central Office of Quality and Measures (Centralny Urząd Jakości i Miar, now Główny Urząd Miar) in Warsaw. His field of expertise was in applied optics, workplace safety and the impact of physical factors on living organisms.

He was awarded many medals and awards for his science projects and teaching methods. In 1984, he was named Honorary Warka Citizen. Dr. Marciniak died on September 28, 1999 in Warsaw and was buried at the emblematic Powązki Cemetery. In 2002, the 1st Public Middle School in Warka was named for him.
